Big 12 to host football championship game at AT&T Stadium
(KTUL) -- No matter how you feel about the issue, the Big 12 is bringing back its football championship game. Now, it has a home.
The Big 12 Conference announced Friday that AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host the championship game during the 2017-2021 seasons. The conference announced in June the championship game would be returning after a six-year hiatus.
"There is great anticipation with the return of the Big 12 Football Championship and we look forward to hosting the event in AT&T Stadium for the next five years,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby in a news release. “The building is a state of the art facility and offers many amenities that will be enjoyed by our institutions and fans.”
Before the decision to bring the championship game back, the Big 12 Conference was the only Power 5 conference without a conference championship game for football. The 10-team conference had been discussing the possibility of expanding to 12 teams, but the Big 12 ultimately decided to stand pat.
The 2009 and 2010 Big 12 championship games were played at AT&T Stadium, which holds between 80,000 and 100,000 people.
FOX Sports will air the championship game in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. ESPN will air the game in the remaining years.
