Double Impact: Withee twins leave lasting impression on TU softball

"Coach was out recruiting and my dad basically told him it was a package deal just kind of as a joke. But we did come together. And it's been great."

They may look alike but apparently that's where the similarities stop for the Withee twins. Maggie plays third base while Maddie is an outfielder. Maggie bats left-handed while Maddie bats right. But both seniors have long been impact players for the Golden Hurricane.

"Two of the most fundamentally sound players I've had come through the program," praised head coach John Bargfeldt. "Sacrifice bunt? It's perfect. Or if you ask them to come up with the big hit. And then their defense; Maggie Withee went through this entire season with one error at third base.

"And it was one where a ball hopped up and hit her in the chin. She just rushed her throw a little bit. And that was the last game of the year."

When asked if the twins ever tricked the coaches by switching uniforms, Bargfeldt denied it. "I actually can tell them apart pretty well," he claimed.

The Withee twins had a different story. "We did in practice once last May; just once," said Maddie.

"One time they put us in the same [practice] group which is rare," Maggie explained.

"They don't do that. So I was like, 'Let's switch places. You go up left handed. I'll go up right handed.' So I went up there first and I just started bunting right handed. And our coaches just started pitching. And one of our players was like, 'Hey that's Maggie!' And we were like, 'Aww you blew it!'"

For the second year in a row, the Golden Hurricane will play their NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma. Except this time, the Sooners are the defending national champions.

Tulsa comes in as the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3 seed Arkansas in the double elimination tournament. First pitch is at 12:30 p.m.
