TU's Etou named AAC Player of the Week
The University of Tulsa senior forward Junior Etou was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Etou averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in wins over ECU and Tulane last week to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 2-0 start to conference play for the second time in its four seasons in The American.
The Republic of Congo native helped TU open conference play with a big 79-53 win over ECU on Dec. 28 by posting his second double-double of the campaign with 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Etou nearly had the double-double by halftime (10 points, 8 rebounds) and the output pushed him over 1,000 points for his Division I career.
He followed up that performance with 14 points and six rebounds in TU’s win at Tulane on New Year’s Eve. Etou scored nine of his 14 points in the second half as Tulsa handed the Green Wave its first home loss of the season and the Hurricane snapped a 10-game conference road losing streak.
For the season, Etou is averaging 17.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per outing and those marks rank third and seventh in the league, respectively.
This is the first conference player of the week honor for Etou, who has been named to the league’s weekly honor roll four times in his two seasons at TU.
Etou and the Golden Hurricane (9-5, 2-0) are back in action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3 against UConn (7-6, 0-1) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
