WELEETKA, Okla. (KTUL) – Two teenage boys died Sunday from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in Okfuskee County.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the boys, ages 14 and 15, brought a portable gas generator inside a travel trailer. The father of the younger boy went to check on them and found they had died.
The boys, who were friends, were apparently using the generator after the storms knocked out power.
The 15-year-old's name was Matthew Harrison, his mother Le Ann, said she's shocked this happened to her baby boy.
"Matt got the idea to take the generator in the trailer and they'd have electricity. You never put a generator in a trailer," said Harrison.
Her husband is the one who discovered the boys after they stopped answering their cell phones. Le Ann then came out to try to save them.
"The minute I went out in the trailer, it took my breath, there was so much carbon monoxide. And I tried to work with him and give him CPR, but it was just too late. I felt his pulse, and there was none," said Harrison.
She doesn't think she'll be able to step inside the trailer again.
"It's going to take a while to forget that image, but I'm like you, I'm going to think of the good things. You couldn't ask more out of the boy," said Harrison.
She said Matthew was smart and a good kid, and she now has a guardian angel.
"They're probably in heaven right now laughing and carrying on," said Harrison.
The medical examiner said he believes this is a case of carbon monoxide poisoning.
There is no set funeral date as of yet.
