6-year-old boy dies after falling into Lake Stanley Draper
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
A 6-year-old child was pronounced dead hours after he was rescued from Lake Stanley Draper.
First responders said he was under for nearly 45 minutes.
He was said to be in critical condition when he was pulled from the water around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. First responders immediately began CPR after he was pulled out.
"Extremely sad situation,” Captain David Macy with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said. “A mom and four kids. The four kids are home-schooled and they wanted to get out of the house and the kids wanted to look at the water."
Firefighters said the kids jumped out of their mother’s car and ran toward the water before their mom could catch up. The 6-year-old may have lost his footing as he got close to the edge of the dock and fell into water that was around 11 feet deep.
"It looks like maybe he just ran down there, maybe lost his footing as he got to the end of the dock," Macy said.
Macy said the boy's mother went into the water after him.
"Mom went in after the child and realized she wasn’t a good swimmer herself."
He said the mother then got out of the water and called 911.
Police, fire and EMSA arrived just minutes after they were called. After a nearly 45 minute search, the dive team pulled the boy from the water.
First responders said he was in cardiac arrest and quickly took him to the hospital. Police confirmed around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday that the child passed away.
