LUTHER, Okla. (KOKH) -- A student is in custody after stabbing a classmate several times during an assembly on the first day of class at an Oklahoma school.

Oklahoma County Sheriff spokesman Mark Opgrande confirms that at approximately 8:29 a.m. a 14-year-old female student was stabbed multiple times at Luther High School. Opgrande says the incident occurred during an all-school assembly in the school's auditorium. During the assembly the suspect stood up and began stabbing the victim. The girl was sent by medical helicopter to an Oklahoma City hospital where she is receiving care.

Luther High School senior Wayne Smith tells FOX 25 he was 25 to 30 feet away from the incident. He tells FOX 25 that several teachers jumped on the suspect after the attack and then threw him against a wall. The suspect was then taken into custody by school staff and the auditorium was evacuated.

Luther Police Department Chief David Randall says the girl was stabbed 9 to 11 times. They have interviewed the suspect, who has since been booked into a juvenile detention center.

Thursday was the first day back to school for students in the district. Luther Public School Superintendent Barry Gunn says the school is allowing parents to pick up their students if they would like but they will not be canceling class for the day. Students will not be charged an absence if picked up.

"Obviously we can't proceed as normal, but we are going to pretend we are." Gunn said. "We run buses tomorrow and we come back and do the best we can, pick ourselves up and try to go back to normal."

Gunn says that the school will have extra counselors on hand for students on Friday. The Luther Register reports that the school is one of the first in the state to adopt a "armed school personnel" policy allowing employees to carry a concealed handgun.

The motive for the stabbing is unclear, Opgrande said, and authorities have interviewed as many witnesses as possible at the scene.
