Beggs battles for first championship in 40 years
BEGGS, Okla. (KTUL) —
The disco-like spotlight was reminiscent of the last time the Beggs Demons won a state championship in football.
"The town's excited, we're all excited," said Beggs Athletic Director Justin Been.
So excited. A lot of people showed up to the pep rally extra early just to re-watch the game that got them here, and further bask in the glow of making it this far.
"This is for our second Beggs state title," Been said. "Last time we were in the finals was 1977 where we finished runner-up. The 1975 team won the first state championship in school history in football."
"You gotta go hard the whole game," said one player from the '75 team, some of whom attended the pep rally. The memory of victory is still fresh, even for the former water boy.
"Keep 'em from getting dehydrated!" he smiled.
They'll be up against John Marshall Friday night, and according to some fans, the game could end up being a real nail-biter.
One young fan predicted a final score of 39 to 40.
The Golden Demons have been waiting 40 years for their third state championship game.
Beggs students are confident their team will claim the victory.
