TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Many teachers, police and firefighters are not getting their full social security benefits, even though they're paid in.
Now, a bill to get rid of the rules that reduce social security benefits for public servants, is moving forward.
The Social Security Fairness Act is meant to fix an untouched flaw in a decades old federal law.
Right now, two provisions reduce benefits for public servants and their spouses.
All five Oklahoma representatives have supported getting rid of it.
Leaders with the Tulsa Firefighters Union, the Local Fraternal Order of Police and the Oklahoma Education Association, say this law needs to change.
"And we need to make sure that our public servants, our teachers, our educators, our firefighters, police officers that have given their life to their profession, that they are taken care of, in their retirement and they have that benefit they deserve," said Katherine Bishop, President of the Oklahoma Education Association.
Several representatives who co-sponsored the bill are now pushing to force a vote on the house floor.
