Circle Cinema honors Black History Month with Black Love film series
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Circle Cinema is celebrating Black History Month in the month of February.
They will show films and put on events to show support.
Headlining this month is the Black Love film series which will feature African American romance films and live music by Tulsa R&B Singer OmaleyB, sponsored by Black Vibe Tulsa.
Black Love will feature a variety of lineups this month including three locally-made documentaries and a special photography exhibit.
“Black Love is a series about celebration,” said Circle Cinema Executive Director Brent Ortolani. “Working with Circle Cinema’s African American advisory council, we’re showing films meant to break down stereotypes and present the Black experience on-screen in positive ways.”
“Black Vibe Tulsa is proud to be one of the sponsors of this series,” said Jameelah Stuckey, Black Vibe Tulsa Founder, Educational Equity Consultant, and member of Circle’s African American Advisory Council. "It is important to showcase the many facets of black love, especially at a time when we are not being or feeling loved by society. This series is able to provide a light-hearted space for us to come together and feel with Monica, vibe with Darius, laugh at Marus (in my Eartha Ktit voice), kiss Lucky, and fall in love with Danny. It is important and imperative that we continue to make these types of films accessible to the community not only in February but all year long."
As part of the sponsorship, Black Vibe Tulsa is providing ten free tickets for each Black Love film for those who may not be able to attend otherwise.
All Black Love events will begin at 6 p.m. with Live Music from OmaleyB in the gallery, and movie-themed drink specials at the Circle Bar.
The films will follow, starting at 7 p.m.
The films that will be featured include:
- About Last Night (2014) – Thursday, February 9
- Love Jones (1997) – Tuesday, February 14
- Boomerang (1992) – Thursday, February 16
- Poetic Justice (1993) – Thursday, February 23
Additional screenings and events coming to Circle Cinema in support of Black History Month include:
- Rebuilding Black Wall Street: My Life - Premiere on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m., with daily screenings beginning Friday, Feb. 10
- Booker T. Washington Boys Basketball: A Legacy of Champions – Free screening Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.
- Crown - Premiere on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m., with daily screenings beginning Saturday, Feb. 18
- In the Gallery: Crowning Glory - Art exhibit on display all month
