Double fatal crash on Muskogee Turnpike

Double fatal crash on Muskogee Turnpike (KTUL)

Flashing red and blue lights on the Muskogee Turnpike on this Fourth of July, but it's anything but a celebration once you get a look at the cars involved.

Troopers say two women died after a crash on the highway. It all started around 8 Wednesday morning.

Troopers say the driver of a black pickup truck slammed into the back of another car.

"Witnesses at the scene say that the other car, for whatever reason, was in the outside lane," said Lt. Mike Childress with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "They were either driving very slow or almost completely stopped on the road."

There's still a lot of questions surrounding this case, launching and investigation.

At times, troopers stopped traffic on the turnpike so they could fly their drone.

"We're looking at the speeds of both vehicles," said Trooper Kenny Knight. " The fact that there were two fatalities means more work will go into it. "

The driver and the passenger in the pickup were not injured, and troopers don't think alcohol was a factor, but the driver was taken to the hospital for a blood test.

As the investigation continues, troopers are using this tragedy as an opportunity to remind drivers to be safe on the road.

"You have to pay attention at all times," said Knight.

"Don't text and drive; don't talk on your cell phone, and drive the speed limit," said Childress.

Troopers are not releasing the names of the victims until next of kin has been notified.
