Jenks listed as fastest growing city in Oklahoma; leaders say it complements Tulsa
Jenks, Okla. (KTUL) —
Tulsa has some of the fastest growing cities in the state right next door, including Jenks, which is growing steadily every year. The growth is to the point city leaders there believe the town could run out of new residential space in 10 years.
But city planner Robert Bell says there is no competition between Jenks and Tulsa, because each city has its own part to play in the region.
“So people want to come to the Tulsa area and can stay a week, and not just a day or two days. And then we have to have jobs. Well, Jenks doesn’t have the area for industrial, so you have to have markets that Tulsa has,” said Bell, who says Jenks provides tourist attractions like the Oklahoma Aquarium.
Bell says Jenks adds about 300 new homes a year, which equates to about 1,000 new people moving to the community annually. He predicts within 10 years all of the space for new homes will be gone.
“I think we’ve got enough people here already but I’m sure the city leaders don’t think that. It’s trafficand it doesn’t bother me,” said Doug Pilgrim, who grew up in Jenks and still lives there.
City leaders say the goal now is to keep growing with commercial developments to provide more necessities for people who live in Jenks.
Bell says the Simon Outlet Mall is still committed to opening in Jenks. He is not sure when.
