Long-time City of Tulsa public servant Dwain Midget was posthumously named the Grand Marshal of the 44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Parade.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Society made the announcement Thursday saying Midget embodies this year's theme, "We Are Stronger When Working Together."

"We can think of no one more eminently qualified to be this year's Grand Marshal given all that he did for the Tulsa community," said Pleas Thompson, President of the MLK Commemorative Society. "He truly embodies our parade theme, and we are honored to recognize him as our Grand Marshal."

On Jan. 16 at 11 a.m., thousands of people are expected to attend the parade, which begins at the corner of North Detroit Avenue and John Hope Franklin Boulevard. The parade will end around ONEOK Field.

"Dwain worked at the state and national level, spending most of his career at the City of Tulsa where he served under eight mayoral administrations," the MLK Commemoration Society said about Midget's work for the city. "He worked tirelessly to find common ground around challenging issues. His accomplishments include assisting with Tulsa’s transition to a Mayor/City Council form of government, advocating for neighborhood revitalization and development of underserved areas. Dwain was passionate about home ownership and created initiatives to focus on neighborhoods that provided affordable housing."
