James Patterson, 37, was shot and killed, according to police. He was outside the home when officers arrived, but police say they're investigating exactly where he was shot.

The second suspect, 18-year-old Brandon Lee Gray, was arrested. Police say the homeowner held him at gunpoint until officers got to the scene. Gray faces a first-degree murder charge because he was committing a felony while Patterson was shot and killed, according to police. Both suspects were unarmed at the time of the attempted home invasion.

Police say Patterson was the boyfriend of Gray's mother.

The homeowner who opened fire was interviewed by police and later allowed to leave. He does not face charges at this time.

This is the first homicide of the year for Sand Springs.
