TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — A memorial service was held Saturday for Enoch Kelly Haney, a former Oklahoma lawmaker, chief of the Seminole Nation, and nationally-renowned artist.
The service was held at the new First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City.
Family and friends remembered Haney for his many accomplishments, but perhaps one of the biggest is the 3-ton bronze statue on top of the Oklahoma State Capitol.
NewsChannel 8's Mark Bradshaw was there when the statue was lifted onto the capitol dome back in 2007.
"I think it represents people from all over the world that lived in tribal states and wore basically the same type of regalia," Haney said of the statue.
During the 2007 dedication, Haney said "The Guardian" is meant to showcase Oklahoma's diversity and ability to overcome.
