The state superintendent says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are encouraging kids to return to school, and they have no plans to deter from that.

Joy Hofmeister says families need to take precautions to protect their children against the coronavirus.

Despite new state laws that restrict districts from mask and vaccine requirements, adding to their challenges, Hofmeister says she doesn't anticipate a disruption like last year.

".We know that if someone is vaccinated they aren't going to have to quarantine if they are exposed to COVID so vaccines are critical," Hofmeister said. "We saw a large percentage of teachers and school personnel taking the vaccine when it was offered last spring so this is a good sign that protection continues.."

Hofmeister is encouraging families to talk with their pediatrician ahead of the school year.
