The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says they're investigating an officer-involved shooting on Highway 59 near Sallisaw.

The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office called the OSBI in for assistance. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol blocked off one northbound and one southbound lane on Highway 59 during the incident.

Police say they received a call around 9 a.m. reporting a suspicious person walking along the highway. The caller said the person appeared to match the description of an inmate that reportedly escaped from Missouri.

Sallisaw officers made contact with 27-year-old Shawn Taylor Watie of Stillwell. Watie came after the officers with a knife at which point Water was shot by the officers, police say.

The two Sallisaw officers rendered aid until EMS arrived, and Watie was taken to the hospital where he died.

OSBI is still investigating the incident.

The names of the two officers are not being released at this time but are currently on paid administrative leave.
