OWASSO, Okla. (KTUL) — An 8-year-old girl reportedly being expelled from a private Christian school over a girl crush has the Owasso community talking.
The girl’s mother says her daughter had been attending Rejoice Christian Schools but says their family is not allowed to return.
A second-grader kicked out of a private Christian school for liking another girl.
That’s what Delanie Shelton says happened to her 8-year-old daughter.
"She was upset and crying and asking me if God still loves me if she is wrong for the way that she feels," said mother Delanie Shelton.
The Owasso mother says Rejoice Christian Schools, where they’ve been enrolled for several years, expelled her daughter Chloe for telling her classmate she had a crush on her.
A move that’s left her shocked.
"The superintendent called me and let me know that they would be ending their partnership with our family," said Shelton.
Shelton says what makes her most upset is the discussion with the school.
She says her daughter is too young to comprehend same-sex relationships but says the school made her feel ashamed.
"I don't believe that my daughter should have been ripped out of the only school that they've known for the past several years," said Shelton.
Now the family is looking for a new school to go to during the middle of a pandemic.
Chloe's story has received a lot of attention, including a local pastor who says the school could have handled the situation better.
"My thoughts and beliefs would be that the school would want a good relationship with the parents, I imagine the parents are hurt," said Pastor Scott Carlson.
Pastor Scott Carlson follows the bible and says he has beliefs about relationships.
"Hopefully the parents understood where the school stood on these issues before they enrolled their child," said Carlson.
As for Shelton, she says this unfortunate outcome has provided her a teachable moment with her daughter.
"Whatever makes people happy they should be allowed to do," said Shelton.
An Oklahoma mother open to choice; leaving a school with reportedly a very clear stance.
