TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has identified the suspect killed in a trooper-involved shooting that shut down the Turner Turnpike for hours on Saturday.
OHP says they were contacted by the Arizona Police Department to be on the lookout for a car driven by armed robbery suspect, 32-year-old Charles Carswell.
Troopers located the car in Canadian County and tried stopping it but Carswell took off, initiating a chase.
Carswell got onto the Kilpatrick Turnpike and began to fire shots at officers through his rear window. Troopers tried to perform a tactical vehicle intervention several times to no success.
Carswell then entered the Turner Turnpike where troopers were able to successfully stop his car at mile marker 140.
OHP says as soon as the car stopped Carswell got out, grabbed a rifle, and began firing at law enforcement again. He barricaded himself in his vehicle until the OHP Tactical Team arrived on scene.
Carswell continued firing at law enforcement, and troopers fired back, hitting Carswell and killing him.
The Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office assisted OHP with the incident.
