TPD: Shooter released after deadly motel shooting in midtown (KTUL)

Tulsa police are responding to a shooting at the Super 8 Motel near 31st and Memorial.

Officers say they found a 33-year-old man outside the hotel. He told police that he called in the shooting on himself, saying he was the shooter and that he had a gun in his pocket. He was taken into custody.

Emergency responders were sent to the second floor of the motel where they found a 34-year-old man dead inside the room that was rented to the shooter.

TPD found out the shooter rented the room at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The victim had been staying at the motel since Aug. 1, 2018. Officers say they are not sure if the two men knew each other before the shooting.

The victim had locked himself out of his room and went knocking on random doors in the motel creating a disturbance, police say.

The shooter opened his door and confronted the victim. The victim walked into the shooter-s room without being invited inside, so the shooter shot him, saying he feared for his life due to the victim's actions.

Officers say the suspect shot the victim one time.

The shooter has been released at this time.

TPD says surveillance video confirms the victim was creating a disturbance before walking into the shooter's room. After searching the victim's room, officers say he may have been huffing starter fluid before the shooting.

This is a developing story.
