HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Alex Murdaugh's lawyers are asking for an additional $160,000 out of Murdaugh's leftover retirement funds to pay legal fees for his pending appeal.
The funds are held by the court-appointed receivers in charge of Murdaugh's assets.
He's already spent $600,000 from that retirement fund on lawyers and legal fees. $424,00 is leftover.
The motion was filed in Hampton County on Tuesday. Read the full document here.
The funds received from Murdaugh’s retirement account in defense of the murders and related charges at trial have been exhausted," the motion states.
Murdaugh's attorneys filed a notice of appeal on March 9, but an official appeal has not yet been filed.
The requested fees and costs are reasonable and necessary for the appeal," the motion states. "If the court does not grant this motion, the burden of representing Murdaugh will shift to the already overworked appellate public defenders."
Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of the murders of his wife and son, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.
