A police officer was shot and taken to a hospital in Arizona on Friday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The department described it as "a critical incident."

The Phoenix Officer involved in this violent and unprovoked attack is being treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound," police noted on Twitter. "Doctors' initial assessment is that the injuries are non-life-threatening."

Police also said "officers and detectives are actively tracking down all leads to find the suspect responsible."

Authorities said they responded to the area of 9th Avenue and Atlanta Avenue around 10 a.m.

Police said the scene remained active and asked the public to avoid the area.

"Traffic restrictions will be in place all around the neighborhood," according to authorities.

Several schools in the area were temporarily placed on lockdown.

Police thanked the public for the outpouring of support on social media, as well as expressed gratitude to medical professionals for taking care of the officer.

"Thank you to the hospital and staff for your care while we continue working through this investigation," police noted.

Authorities have not identified the officer. They also have not identified the suspect.
