Blog: Who's the "face" of college football in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was winning social media and the idea of "viral" video before we even understood its potential. (KTUL)

The University of Tulsa's football team reported for fall camp on Wednesday, which got me thinking: with the season lurking just around the corner, who is the "face" of college football in Oklahoma this season?

For the past, oh, 16 seasons you could argue it was Bob Stoops. True, you could possibly make the case for one of his players, depending on the year: Jason White, Sam Bradford, Adrian Peterson, Roy Williams, & Josh Heupel come to mind.

Now that Stoops is watching from the bleachers - who comes to mind when you think of college football in Oklahoma? I'm referring to current players or coaches, too - don't come at me with Barry Switzer, because The King would be the obvious answer.

I can't think of anyone at TU that would fit the bill, despite the stellar first two seasons by head coach Philip Montgomery. He needs a few more years at 11th and Harvard before he'd be at the top of this list. Losing Dane Evans and Keevan Lucas pretty much takes all the Golden Hurricane players out of the running as well.

The same knock on Monty applies to Lincoln Riley, who has yet to lead a team out of the tunnel as a head coach.

You could make a decent argument for Mason Rudolph, OSU's prolific gunslinger...but I'd lean towards two other options:

* Baker Mayfield, OU's Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback.

-- OR --

* Mike Gundy, OSU's mullet-wearing head coach.

It's hard to pick between the two - but if we're eliminating coaches due to a lack of longevity (Monty & Riley), shouldn't we award Mike Gundy the title of the "Face" of college football in Oklahoma?
