TU Volleyball rehires assistant Gary Mathews

Gary Mathews rejoins University of Tulsa women's volleyball after previously serving as an assistant coach from 1997-2005.

The University of Tulsa Volleyball Team and Head Coach Ryan Wills have announced the hiring of Gary Mathews to the position of assistant coach on Wednesday.

“We are excited to have Gary back in Tulsa,” said Wills. “Not many people have put more into Tulsa Volleyball than Gary. He knows the program and he knows the game. We are fortunate to have him join our team.”

Mathews returns to Tulsa after serving as an assistant coach from 1997 to 2005, where his duties included recruiting efforts to coordinate, observe and evaluate prospective student-athletes. In addition to his on-court instruction, Mathews handled video breakdown of individual players and the team as well as opponents.

Mathews spent the last 13 years with USA Volleyball, serving as a coordinator for the High Performance National Indoor Programs, the National Team Center as well as the Junior Beach Tour before most recently taking a position as the Program Manager of the USA Volleyball North Texas Region.

Before arriving to Tulsa in 1997, Mathews was a volunteer assistant coach at The University of Georgia for a season.

Mathews graduated with his Bachelors of Science Degree in Physical Education from Illinois State University in 1995.
